On CloudMonster Series: A Comprehensive Review

One of On’s most iconic running shoes is the CloudMonster series. Unlike the CloudTech Phase shoes, which share a similar design, the CloudMonster lineup varies in cushioning, look, and fit. A defining feature of all CloudMonster models is their forward-rolling technology, where the shoe curves up near the toes, creating a natural rocking motion that helps propel you forward. Additionally, with the hexagonal Cloudtech technology creates a soft and stable landing in all directions.

The first Cloudmonster introduced On’s Helion midsole, a blend of EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) and OBC (Olefin Block Copolymer), delivering a 59% rebound value. It has a clean, stylish design that sets it apart from the other Monster series models.

With its single Helion midsole and narrow structure, the CloudMonster is lighter than the CloudMonster 2, weighing in at 275 grams. Its sleek look makes it easy to style with any outfit. Though On has now categorized this shoe under the all-day walking section, it remains a solid option for running.

CloudMonster 2

The CloudMonster 2 takes everything from the original and amplifies it. It features a dual-foam construction, which On calls Double Helion. The bottom midsole uses the same EVA and OBC hybrid as the original CloudMonster, while the top midsole consists of an EVA and POE (Polyolefin Elastomer) blend, resulting in a 54% rebound value. Other On shoes with Double Helion include the Cloudflyer, Cloudnova X, and CloudMonster Hyper.

With its wider fit, the CloudMonster 2 offers more stability but is also the heaviest in the series at 295 grams. The bulkier design may not appeal to everyone, but the added width provides lateral stability, making it a solid choice for those who prioritize support.

CloudMonster Hyper

Although the CloudMonster Hyper resembles the CloudMonster 2, it delivers a completely different experience. This shoe is all about bounce and energy return. While it also features a Double Helion midsole, its composition is unique. The bottom midsole consists of an EVA and POE blend with a 52% rebound value, while the top midsole is made from PEBA (Polyether Block Amide), which On refers to as Helion HF (HyperFoam). Helion HF is commonly used in performance race shoes due to its high rebound, lightweight feel, and superior thermal stability.

Thanks to its Helion HF midsole, microfiber upper, and lack of a speedboard, the CloudMonster Hyper is the lightest in the series at 272 grams. It also has a wide fit, making it comfortable for longer runs.

My Personal Take

The CloudMonster has the best aesthetic, making it easy to pair with different outfits. On also offers a variety of colors, from classic all-white to vibrant options like fawn turmeric. My personal favorite is the newly released frost wash. However, I now use this shoe primarily for walking rather than running, as I prefer models with more cushioning, such as the CloudMonster Hyper and CloudEclipse.

The CloudMonster 2 is great for shorter runs, but its bulky look doesn’t appeal to me. After experiencing the Hyper, it’s hard to go back. The ride feels similar to other brands, and honestly, I probably wouldn’t wear it if not for my employee discount. That said, the wide fit makes it feel stable when standing or running, which is a plus.

My favorite, without question, is the CloudMonster Hyper. I initially relied on the CloudEclipse for long-distance running, but after an 18-mile run followed by a shift on the sales floor, my heels were aching. Fortunately, a store lead gifted me a lightly used pair of CloudMonster Hypers, and the pain disappeared instantly. I was bouncing around, helping customers without distraction.

The Hyper also offers a unique feel. Whenever customers ask if there’s another shoe similar to the CloudMonster Hyper, I struggle to find a comparable option. Other On models featuring Helion HF, such as the CloudBoom Echo, CloudBoom Zone, and CloudBoom Strike, have thinner midsoles and speedboards, which take away the bouncy sensation that makes the Hyper special.

My only complaint? The limited color options. I wish On would introduce more subtle tones. They recently released a glacier ivory color, which is a step in the right direction. While the shoe does have a bulky look similar to the Monster 2, I don’t mind it since I wear it strictly for running, not casual wear.

Final Thoughts

The CloudMonster series offers something for everyone, whether you prioritize style, stability, or performance. The original CloudMonster is the most versatile, perfect for everyday wear and light running. The CloudMonster 2, though bulkier, provides a stable and cushioned ride. But for me, the standout is the CloudMonster Hyper—its lightweight feel, unmatched bounce, and comfort make it my top choice for long-distance runs. If On expands the color selection, it could be the perfect shoe.
