On CloudTech Phase: A Comprehensive Review

On’s CloudTech Phase, released in 2023, is a significant leap in their running shoe technology. Similar to the original CloudTech, the CloudTech Phase midsole is made from what On calls Helion—a blend of EVA (Ethylene-vinyl Acetate) and PoE (Polyolefin Elastomer), known for delivering 52% rebound energy. EVA is the foundation of many running shoe soles across the industry.

How is the CloudTech Phase Different from the Original CloudTech?

One of the most noticeable differences between the CloudTech and the CloudTech Phase is the midsole design. While the original CloudTech featured square and hexagonal holes, the CloudTech Phase introduces diagonal oval holes. When compressed, these ovals create a domino effect that helps propel you forward. This innovative design eliminates the need for a speedboard, meaning that only the CloudEclipse in the series comes with one.

The CloudSurfer

The first shoe to feature the CloudTech Phase technology was the CloudSurfer, released in Q1 of 2023. Known for its plush cushioning, the CloudSurfer is geared toward beginner runners who are not accustomed to the impacts of running. In February 2024, On released the CloudSurfer 2, which promises more support, a firmer midsole, and enhanced stability.

CloudEclipse

Launched in Q4 of 2023, the CloudEclipse is the second shoe in the CloudTech Phase series. This model is unique because it’s the only one to feature a speedboard—a cross-shaped one placed at the bottom of the shoe to maximize cushioning. The CloudEclipse is also the only shoe in the series designed for long-distance runs, offering a balance of stability and cushioning. In contrast, the CloudSurfer and CloudSurfer Next are better suited for shorter distances.

CloudSurfer Next

The final model in the CloudTech Phase lineup, the CloudSurfer Next, was released in Q3 of 2024. Designed in response to feedback that the CloudSurfer was too soft, the CloudSurfer Next offers better stability and grip, making it an excellent choice for those who need more structure in their shoe without sacrificing comfort.

What Could Be Improved in the CloudTech Phase?

Despite its innovative design, the CloudTech Phase shoes are prone to squeaking due to the shape and foam of the holes. Sometimes a quick fix for this is applying baby powder into the holes. On has attempted to address this issue in the CloudSurfer 2 by adding texture to the holes, but it remains to be seen if this resolves the problem entirely. Some consumers have also expressed concerns about the bulky appearance of the shoes. However, given the nature of the design and the structure of the holes, it may be challenging for On to resolve this entirely without compromising performance.

My Personal Take

Having tested all three models, my favorite is the CloudEclipse. It offers the stability I need for long training runs, and the speedboard provides the right amount of rigidity and energy rebound. However, after a long run of 15 miles or more, I find that the CloudEclipse feels too soft for standing or walking for extended periods. It doesn't offer enough support for my heels and ankles, which can be problematic for long days when I have work afterward. For those occasions, I opt for the CloudMonster Hyper, which offers more structure.

In contrast, the CloudSurfer is too soft and unstable for my running needs, though I do appreciate its cushioning for walking. The release of the CloudSurfer 2 didn't impress me much in terms of performance, as I didn't feel a significant difference between the original and the updated model. However, the CloudSurfer series makes an excellent walking shoe, though On does have a Cloudtech Phase walking shoe already. The CloudTilt, which was introduced in February 2024. Its lightweight cushioning is gentle on the joints and back, making it a great option for those who need extra comfort during walks. Plus, it features On’s speed lacing system, making it easy to slip on and go.

When I first tried On shoes, I was put in the CloudSurfer Next by my boss, and I immediately preferred it over the CloudSurfer. The added stability and structure made a significant difference. The colorways are also more appealing, with the new Niagara White being a standout. For my shorter daily runs, I reach for the CloudSurfer Next for its better balance between cushioning and support.

Conclusion

In conclusion, On’s CloudTech Phase represents an exciting development in running shoe technology. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned runner, there’s a model for you. The CloudSurfer series is perfect for those seeking a soft, cushioned ride, but it may be too soft for more experienced runners. The CloudEclipse, with its speedboard and enhanced stability, is the best choice for long-distance runners, though its softness and squeaking may be a concern for some. Meanwhile, the CloudSurfer Next strikes a great balance of cushioning and stability for shorter runs, offering a more structured feel than the original CloudSurfer. While some improvements in design and stability could elevate the line even further, the CloudTech Phase has something for everyone looking for the perfect fit.
